January is a good month to get deals on some items.  Here are the top items that go on sale in January.

If you are anything like me, you probably don’t feel like buying anything new right now.  Christmas can be a huge personal and financial stress for many.  The pressure to get ‘stuff’ can be overwhelming for many people.

Being frugal-minded, however, can help to minimize this stress by keeping you focused on the things that matter most in your life … in a sense, living with priorities in mind.  Many of these ‘things’ are not monetary at all, but some of them are.

Here are some items that normally go on sale on January and which can help you achieve these priorities.:

Office Furniture

Yes, office furniture often goes on sale in January.  You might want to start or expand a new home business or another existing business, and office furniture can help you get there.  January is a good month to get good deals on these items.

HDTV and Home Theatre

Maybe you want a new HDTV or to set up a cool home theatre system.  This is also a good time to buy these types of items as they often go on sale in December (pre-Christmas rush) and soon afterwards in order to make room for new inventory.

Real Estate

If you live in a hot real estate market (like I do, in Toronto), it may seem hard to believe that there is a seasonality to real estate, but there is.  While you are not likely to get a multi-million dollar home for a huge discount, you could get a better deal (at least in relative terms).

Most people prefer not to move during the holidays or during the winter if they have other options.  It is a family time for many, and it’s cold!  Real estate listings tend to decrease during the winter months and the listing tend to stay on the market for longer as a result.  If moving or owning a home is a priority for you, now might be a good time to look.

Weddings

No pressure to get married, but if you have been planning on it and are ready, getting married in January can save you a bundle if you plan to get married in a colder part of the world.

Weddings can be enormously expensive.  Getting married in the winter can save you a bundle as demand for them is low.  Many families have already committed a significant amount of money to travel and Christmas, and are stretched pretty thin right now.  Furthermore, many newly married couples prefer to have beautiful spring or summer (or fall) outdoor settings for pictures and outdoor receptions.  Wedding photographers, wedding planners, cake makers, dress makers, florists, caterers, etc. would love to have a chance to plan a winter wedding for you and they often offer reduced rates during this time of year.

Think of all the saved money that could be used for other priorities that you might have with your loved one like a great honeymoon, buying a home, or having children.

Gas Grills

Yep, like a lot of other things, most people don’t like standing outside when it’s really cold.  Gas grill prices shoot up in the spring, so enjoy savings on a gas grill in January and beat everyone else to the chase. There are a huge variety to be had, so do your research.  Here is one of my reviews from a few years ago.

Calendars

One of the most seasonal items (by their very definition) is a calendar.  They are all on sale right now.

Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are popular Christmas gifts.  As such, you start to see some deals on them before Christmas and especially after Christmas when last years inventory is left sitting on the store shelves.  January is a great time to get a good deal on a digital camera.

My seven year-old daughter just had a used one donated to her by a good friend of mine and she uses it a lot.  I also use mine as well quite a bit, so digital cameras get quite a bit of use in my home.  They offer better quality and more features than my phone and are very, very tiny these days.

Furniture

It’s a slow season for furniture sales because many people prefer to move into a new space when it becomes a bit warmer (see real estate above).  Everything from chairs to sofas to beds and tables go on sale in January to match the decrease in demand.

Look for some good deals and you could save yourself a lot of money.

Linens and Bedding

As per real estate and furniture above, new homes tend to accrue new bedding.  If people aren’t moving, real estate and furniture demand tends to diminish and linens and bedding demand tends to follow suit.

Quality linens and bedding are a wonderful thing to have, but they can be very pricey indeed.  Use the month of January as a opportunity to save substantially on these worthwhile items.

Wrapping Paper and Assorted Christmas Stuff

A lot of wrapping paper, tree toppers, bows, Christmas lights, and ornaments, etc. go for sale at large discounts in January.   Many items can be had at 50% off or even more this month.  Buy it now and save it until next year so as to avoid being placed in the premium buying period before Christmas.  Put a bit of space aside in your closet or your basement for these discounted items and you’ll save yourself a tidy sum.

In summary, January is a great month to pick up some wonderful deals on some important items.  Each month has its own great deals, and being attuned to them can save you a lot of money.
