Target Canada will soon be closing its flagship Canadian store in the east end of Toronto. I dropped by today to take a look for myself and it was creepy.
The vast empty areas of the store are blocked off with yellow caution tape. Many shelves are completely bare while others have a few soup cans laying about in a post-apocalyptic fashion. There are huge line-ups (the biggest I have ever seen at Target) while most of the store aisles are void of people. The ‘circling vultures’ metaphor is apropos as the remaining meat is picked off the bones.
Target’s $2.6 billion (U.S.) boondoggle in Canada is a cautionary tale in how not to run a business … period. Just a couple of short years ago, Target Canada was the talk of the town. A smiling Sarah Jessica Parker dropped by for the launch of this location as did Dion Phaneuf. Print, TV, and radio ads were dominated by Target. The hype and the expectations were enormous.
Just a couple short years later, however, and Target is beating a hasty retreat from Canada. The retail giant has failed … miserably.
There are some very basic reasons why Target failed in Canada.
The reasons are so basic, in fact, that the reality that a retail juggernaut like Target did little to address them is perhaps the most surprising thing of all. Read more about it here.
