Private Label Shopping Saves You Money

Private label products are products made by one company to be sold by another company, often at a lower cost than similar brand name products. In many cases, the same manufacturer makes both the brand name product and the private label product. As such, shopping for private label products can often give you a very good product at a very good discounted price.

Here some products that I think you should always buy the private label version of:

HDMI Cables

The difference in price between private label and brand name HDMI cables can be incredible.  I have used only private label HDMI cables and have never had any problems whatsoever.  Salespeople at the electronics stores that I have visited tell me that the brand name cables have better shielding.  I guess this is useful if you are flying into space or if you work with a lot of computers around you, but for my personal use at home the private label cables do me just fine.

All-Purpose White Flour

White flour is made by grinding up wheat.  I have to preface here that I rarely use flour.  The very odd time that I do use it to bake, I have had good results using private label all-purpose white flour.

Doodle Pads and Notebooks

My daughter loves drawing, painting, and doodling.  I use pocket notebooks primarily for making ‘to-do’ lists and shopping lists.  The local dollar store has saved us a lot of money on these items over the years.

White Table Sugar

White table sugar is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.  This is true for private label sugar and brand name sugar.  Furthermore, table sugar is often combined with other stuff like coffee or baked goods and it is rarely tasted independently (even if there was a difference).

Long-Grain Brown Rice

The private label long-grain brown rice that I buy from Metro turns out wonderfully each time.  I cannot taste or see any difference between this rice and brand name rice.  I can see a significant difference in price though.

Over-The-Counter Medications

Private label (or “generic”) over-the-counter medications are subjected to the same quality control standards as brand name medications. There are generic versions of Aspirin, Tylenol, Claritin, Reactine, and many, many, many other medications.  I have asked countless pharmacists if there is any difference between private label and brand name medications and each and every one of them have replied that there is not.  I have been reassured that they have the same active ingredients time and time again.  I still ask the pharmacist each time though, just to make sure.  Buying brand name medications when a private label version is often right there beside it on the shelf just makes no sense to me.

BONUS ITEM: Books

While not a private label, per se, you should always get your books free or used.  I love books; especially the ones I borrow from the public library and ones that I buy at Value Village or garage sales.  While moving boxes of heavy books to a new home has to rank as one of the worst things ever, I do enjoy having a few of my favourites on hand in my home library (Canadians click here).

Other Stuff

I have written a whole other post on private label shopping.  Check it out for even more ideas that will save you lots of money.

Private label products are also rapidly gaining a growing percentage of global market share.

When Private Labels Don’t Save You Money

Some private label stuff is terrible.  Some brand names are clearly superior and are worth paying extra for. Paying more for these particular brand name frozen vegetables and processed cheese slices are two such examples.  Please share a comment below if there are any other products that you will gladly pay more for.

In summary, private label products can save you lots of money easily with no sacrifice in quality.  Private label products are also easy to buy because they are often placed just to the left or to the right of their brand name equivalents.  Saving money is easy with many private label products.
