Netflix is currently offering a free one month trial in Canada. I signed up for Netflix a few weeks ago and have really enjoyed using it. It is not perfect, but I feel that Netflix does represent very good value.
I do not have cable. Basic cable costs about $40.00 bucks in these parts. This just seems too much for too much of the same (so-called ‘reality’ shows and celebrity gossip shows). I watch what I enjoy. My daughter (seventeen months now) watches what she enjoys. Netflix has been our main source of visual entertainment for over a month now and we are both very pleased.
I (currently) love watching documentaries, MONK, and Kids In The Hall. My daughter loves watching “Elmo” (aka Sesame Street), Hammy Hamster, and Pingu. These are the main viewing interests in my household. As such, Netflix meets my viewing needs beautifully.
Now I know that there will be many of you who quite rightfully point out that Netflix.ca is nothing compared to Netflix.com (the US version). You are absolutely right if new releases and a huge selection are important to you. New releases are wonting; I will not disagree.
Why My Family Chooses Netflix.ca:
It meets our viewing needs
We do not watch a lot of television in our home. Any of the broadcast shows that we do watch, we get for free. You miss and/or expect what you are used to. We are used to going outside, talking, writing, drawing, playing peek-a-boo, etc.; and do not look to television as our primary source of entertainment. We watch a very select number of shows and limit our viewing time. As such, we simply have no need or desire for even basic cable.
Netflix.ca has always been available (at least for the six weeks that we have been using it). You can select the streaming quality to control your bandwidth and picture quality. We have been using the lowest quality setting since we have signed up and have been satisfied with the picture quality and streaming speed overall.
Yes, I know that Netflix.ca is not great for new releases, and overall selection (as compared to netflix.com). Nevertheless, my daughter thinks the selection is awesome and I think it is very good based upon what I like to watch (mostly documentaries and TVshows). There is something to be said for having instant access to all the top kids shows (e.g. Backyardigans, Caillou, Sesame Street, Pingu, etc.) and many good documentaries and TV shows. This is a definite area of strength for Netflix.ca.
Well, in my view, I could pay $40.00 for basic cable and get just a handful of channels that I cannot already get for free with my antenna. I could watch more reality and gossip shows. The fact is, that I choose not to. I don’t miss them one iota.
Netflix.ca offers unlimited (and 100% legal) streaming for $7.99 per month. This is one-fifth of the price that I would otherwise pay for cable. I can still watch my CBC, CTV, CityTV, Global, SUNTV, et al. for free using rabbit ears. In essense, my daughter and I can watch all that we want to (both live and streamed) for $7.99 per month. This is dirt cheap!
No Need to find a place for all of your DVDs
This is actually a very significant benefit. DVDs can take up a lot of room. Netflix stores my video library virtually and there is no need to take up shelf space. I like this.
Netflix.ca is not the solution for those of you that want up-to-date movies and a huge selection. It might be a good choice for those of you, however, that want a good selection of on-demand documentaries, children’s shows, and TV shows. For those of you with minimal wants, $7.99 per month represents excellent value.
