Best Buys for August follow a predictable seasonal pattern (as is true for all months). August is the month to stock up and save money on a few key items.
Best Buys are Seasonal
Retailers buy their stock well in advance of any given season or month (often at least one year in advance). They base their purchases on sales projections based upon their knowledge of their customers (hence the proliferation of loyalty and rewards cards) and other projections (such as a predicted warm summer, or cold winter, etc.).
While some items are put on shelves on a consignment basis, most items are owned outright by the retailer. Most retailers rely on high turnover and have no interest in storing last year’s items for sale the following year. The frugal shopper understands the seasonality of items intimately and can use this to ensure that each buy is a best buy that saves them lots of money.
Timing Your Purchases to Ensure a Best Buy
We all know that seasons change. We all know that holidays come and go and that they come back again. Nevertheless, by far the most common shopping method is to buy something the minute that you need it. You will almost never get a best buy shopping this way. This is an expensive way to shop (see the countless people lining up to buy an air conditioner on a really hot day when prices are at the max) and it is a big part of what retailers rely upon for their profits. You do not need to shop this way; we all know that Christmas is coming, we all know that there will be some hot days, we all know that we might want to ride a bicycle when the weather is warm. Use this to your advantage to make sure that each buy you make is a best buy!
What are the Best Buys in August
Just think about what nobody will be using anymore and that retailers will still have on their sales floors – these are your best buys; things like patio furniture (lawn chairs, umbrellas, tables, bistro sets, etc.) , lawn and garden equipment (including decor, planters, lawn mowers, soil, mulch, fertilizer, etc.), Backyard Playstuff (playsets, play centres, swing sets, etc.), bicycles, BBQs, and summer clothing. Most of these items are selling at half price right now – these are your best buys. Don’t wait until the spring to buy these items; you will only end up paying much more than you need to. Buy what you need for next year at best buy prices now. As a bonus, you’ll also have a new present to open next spring.
Best Buys Each Month of the Year
Each month brings with it a whole new round of best buys. Use the seasonality of items to ensure that you are always getting the best buy that you can. Combine this with rain checks to lock in sale prices and you will be buying things for much less than you need to.
