A Rain Check to Save Money

I’ll take a rain check to save money anytime.  Get a rain check and provide yourself with locked-in savings and price protection for up to a full year.

Most places offer rain checks if a sale item is sold out before the sale end date.  Just ask for a rain check at the Customer Service counter if the deal that you went in to get is no longer available because the product is sold out.  The rain check that I got was for half-price Huggies Sung Fit Mega Pack Diapers.  The regular price was $17.99 and they were on sale, half-rice, at $8.99.  Unfortunately, they were completely sold out when I went to buy them.  Perhaps this was not so unfortunate after all.

Get a Rain Check

The store being sold out of the sale item is not a problem.  You can still get the sale price (at most retailers), just by asking for a rain check which allows you to buy the sale item at a later date at the sale price.  Now, there are a couple of very distinct advantages of holding a rain check.

Here are the Benefits:

1)  You lock in Your Sale Price for the Duration of the Rain Check – Conceivably, all of your major staples could be bought at the best sale price you can find at any time for a full year (most rain checks are good for a year, but some may be valid for less time – ask you retailer).  The rain checks that I got for my Huggies are good for one year and each of them is good for six units.  As such, I can buy my diapers half-price for a full year.  Wait for a great deal and go get a rain check.  The rain check itself is better than finding your sale item in stock because you are guaranteed that price for the duration of the rain check.  Who would have thought how great it would be to find your sale item sold out?

2)  You also get inflation protection – The regularly priced $17.99 Huggies Mega Pack had gone up in price to $21.99.  I did get a bit of grief from the cashier who asked for a price check.  The salesperson working in the baby department came back and said that there weren’t any Mega Pack diapers at $17.99; the price was now $21.99.  They honoured my rain check price!  I got three packs of $21.99 diapers (currently selling for $65.97) for a mere $26.97.  This represents a discount of almost 60%.  All because I asked for a rain check when the item that I knew I was going to buy anyways was on sale at a great price.  This great savings became even better as the price rose.  The price protection aspect to this is very important.

In Summary

You can get rain checks for virtually anything than is on sale and that is not available at the store.  Look for great prices on things that you use regularly and lock in the sale price and provide yourself with price protection at the same time.  Most rain checks that I have obtained have been valid for one year.  All you need to do is ask and, in most cases, you will receive a rain check and enjoy these very same benefits.
