Millions upon millions of web searches happen around the world each and every day. Each one of these web search takes a little bit of energy to perform and to display on your screen.  Here is a simple way to save energy and money one web search at a time. Let me introduce you to blackle.com!

I was introduced to this search engine by one of my students a couple of years ago.  Blackle.com is a search engine that has a black screen background (take a look).  According to their website, “”Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.”” Roberson et al, 2002 .  So there it is, a black screen requires less power to display than a white screen.  What a simple, clever idea by Blackle. It is now the first place that I ask my students to start any web research.

Now don’t expect your electricity bills to plummet; I can’t imagine the energy savings at all dramatic.  Nonetheless, it will save you some money.  Further to that, I assume also that your monitor or screen will also last just a little bit longer.  As such, why not at least try try Blackle?  Their motto is “Saving Energy one Search at a Time”.  I like that.  It is all of the little things that we do that end up making a big difference.

Here is a link to blackle.com .  Try it.  Even if you only use it occasionally, you will be making just a small bit of difference (and saving money at the same time).
