BH Photo and Video is a photo and video equipment store.  Looking for a retailer online for photo and video equipment?  Looking to save money and get more for less?  Looking for great customer service and speedy delivery?  Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?  Well …

BH Photo sells digital cameras, camcorders, professional AV equipment, 35mm cameras, computers, binoculars, and lots of other related stuff.  It has a store in New York City and is an online retailer as well.  I recently purchased a Panasonic HDC-SD40 camcorder from them (you can link to this previous review here).  I have to say that dealing with them was perhaps the best online retail experience that I have ever had.

I buy a lot of stuff online.  I have dealt with a lot of online retailers like Amazon.com, FutureShop.com, Tigerdirect.ca, and I have bought a lot of items on EBay.  I consider myself to have a high level of experience dealing with purchases online.  Here is why I like them so much.

1)  Quality and Selection – Check out BH Photo’s website and you’ll see what I mean.  The selection in photo, video, and AV equipment is incredible.

2)  Customer Service – I placed an order with BH Photo and then wanted to change it.  I contacted their customer service department online (a terrific feature) and while they explained that they could not change my order because I had used PayPal, they issued me an immediate refund that was processed the next day.  I have also had two follow up emails since my purchase asking about my experience dealing with them and about my satisfaction with the products that I bought.  This is top-notch, old-school customer service (so sadly lacking almost everywhere these days).

3)  Prices – I live in Canada.  Prices for almost everything here are significantly higher than those in the United States.  The identical items that I bought: a camcorder, two 16GB Professional Quality SDHC cards, and a case would have cost me almost $700 CDN dollars in Toronto.  I bought the identical items at BH, paid for shipping, and my taxes (no duty applied on this purchase)) and my grand total was $360 !  Almost HALF of what I would pay for identical items in Toronto.  Any frugal shopper would simply drool themselves to the point of dehydration at such incredible savings.

4) Delivery – One of the things that is often not so great about buying a product online that is based in another country is the delivery times.  It is also quite common to be slapped with onerous duty fees, taxes, and handling charges.   BH includes all end charges in its invoice.  There are no surprises.  Furthermore, I received my shipment in … wait a second … wait a second more … TWO BUSINESS DAYS (via Purolator courier).  I would normally wait longer for a letter mailed to me from my next door neighbour.   Outstanding.

I would give BH Photo and Video 5 out of a possible 5 stars.  Keep in mind that I am also an out-of-country customer (and still feel this way).  I want to buy something else from them really soon to see if the experience that I had was a one-off, or if it what I can really expect from them on a regular basis.  Please submit your comments and/or share your own experiences dealing with them.  Are there any other good online retailers that you would like to bring to our forum?
